Gonzalo Rubio: "More than objectives, Javi and I want to be competitive and maintain a regularity"

He just got the classification for the Main Draw of the Gijón Open together with his partner Javier Ruiz. Just a few days ago, at the José Martínez Memorial, they already demonstrated that this campaign can give a lot to talk about. Do not miss this interview in which, along with our partner Daniel Gamarra Peñalver, the young player from Seville told us about his challenges and objectives for this campaign.

Padel World Press .- They were one of the 'Revelation Couple' of the seventh edition of the prestigious event held every season in the town of Pilar de la Horadada Alicante ... With a firm step, they stood in a great final in which they fought against you against the future champions: Marcello Jardim-Franco Stupaczuk.

With morale through the roof, they reached the first round of the WPT Tour 2016 season, in which they overcame their two Previa matches to earn a place among the 32 best pairs in the tournament.

Our colleague Daniel Gamarra Peñalver wanted to rescue the interview he had with Gonzalo Rubio at the José Martínez Memorial, in which they analyzed a campaign in which the great left-handed player of HEAD has placed great expectations.
How was your preseason?

We have already three months, since January, of preparation with the preseason. This year I've spent it in Seville. The physical part was directed by Alex Jordan from a distance while the technical part was done by Javi Castañón and Pablo Loza. For me this stage is very important because the preseason is the time of year that gives you the guarantee for the rest of the season ... It is that moment in which you take the necessary strength to endure the entire season. In short, it serves to catch the gasoline that was later spent during the year.

What are your objectives for the new season?

This year I will play with Javi Ruiz. For the moment, the sensations are being quite positive and the objectives will be marked a bit as the tournaments take place. It would be nice to get to be among the 20's best WPT couples ... That would be the short-term goal. Right now we are the 28, so we will enter Previa in most of the tournaments. More than specific objectives, both Javi and I are looking to be competitive and maintain a regularity ... It would be luxury if we knew how to compete well from the 1 couple to the 100 couple. I think I have found a great affinity with Javi and that is a point in our favor when it comes to being able to work in block.

How do you face the first tournament of the season, the Gijón Open?

We wait for Gijón with the typical illusion of a start to the season, especially after so long without competing. For the players, the fact of not having competition becomes difficult and long.

What can be the couple that the bell in this campaign start?

We, hehehehe. Within the Parejas Top is putting many expectations in Paquito-Sanyo and, in my opinion, one should also take into account the one formed by Juan Martín and Cristian.

What do you think of the Jose Martinez Memorial?

Spectacular. This is the third time I play it and I always try to repeat it because it is a spectacular tournament. It comes very well as filming for the Gijon test since the level is real. We all go full, to 100%, and it's a good way to start the season.

I want to thank Padel World Press for this interview and thank the support of my sponsors: HEAD, Dentalworld, Viafina and March's 25.
