Jaime, one of the most combative players in the Circuit, and Martín, a boy without complexes and with a boldness without equal, have decided to join their paths and have a few days together in A Coruña, where they are playing their first matches as a couple.
With great enthusiasm for the new challenge they are about to embark on, Bergareche is preparing for the change that will imply having the experience of Fernando Poggi for the freshness and self-confidence of Martín Sánchez Piñeiro.
With a desire to start competing, the Bilbao hopes to be able to bring out his style of defensive and fighter.
How are the first sensations on the track?
Very good. Both in terms of style of play and character, I like it a lot. It is very positive.
Who is looking for whom at the end of last season?
I looked for him. We all know the year he was doing, the great games he was starring in. I remember an appearance on the Streaming World Padel Tour in which they asked several players that we were watching their match against Mieres-Gutiérrez… And we were all amazed at Piñeiro. I really liked his game and I suggested the idea to him in San Sebastián. Until after San Sebastián he did not confirm it to me.
How are you going to do the training routine living in Bilbao and he in Barcelona?
Everyone will have their workouts; He in Barcelona and I in Bilbao but we will meet in Madrid. Now, for example, Martín goes a whole month there to train with Jorge Martínez, our coach. We are going to meet in Madrid 3 or 4 weeks before starting the year. When the season starts we will also meet in Madrid and, of course, also in Bilbao and Barcelona each one will have a coach even if the couple is Jorge. We both have time and desire to travel and train hard. We are going to see a lot despite the distance.
Which do you think will be your best weapons?
Our best weapon I think is going to be the illusion. We both really want to do it well. On the track I will try to contribute what is mine, which is work. I will try to work so that Martín, who will be more protagonist and will define more points, will feel comfortable. I want him to get his best paddle. And if it does, it will be because I'm doing it right.
What games do you remember about Martin?
I remember Seville against Gutiérrez-Mieres. I was waiting for our match against Bela-Lima and the truth is that we hallucinated. It was spectacular, he played very well. Later I saw the one from Galicia on Streaming, again against Gutiérrez-Mieres, and it was also the same. He surprised me in Malaga against Uri-Conce. Although they lost, Martín performed very well on the track. He was very aggressive and knew how to do a lot of damage. I played against him in Monte Carlo, we were able to beat them by luck, but he surprised me. It has a lot of projection. He is not a player who is going to stay at that level, but in five months, he will have a better level, much higher. Of that I'm sure.
Objectives for 2016
I like to improve and to go out every game to try to win. I don't like it when I see couples who go to games with a bad attitude. I like to believe that we are going to achieve it.
How do you see the season?
I see it very interesting because of all the changes it presents. Sometimes many expectations are generated in some couples that later are not fulfilled while, on the other hand, other pairs of those that maybe do not wait so much, give the surprise and succeed more. I think that the couple that comes out more reinforced is the number 1, because the rest are all new and they will follow their path that they have forged along 2015. The rest have to be formed. That in the above. And among the youngest couples, Ale and Mati, will return to give much to talk about. Last year when they were at their best, the injuries arrived. I think that this year, if you respect them, they are a couple to take into account and serious aspirants to achieve many successes. Botello-Concepción are always there as well, and a lot of them are expected to do more every year. There are other very interesting couples, like Godo Díaz-Lucho Capra, who can do a lot of damage. There's a lot. The level is quite high and there may be many surprises.
What did you learn next to Poggi?
I have learned above all to be very professional. Fernando is a great professional when it comes to training and taking care of food. I have learned a lot in that aspect. And I've also learned to fight the matches until the end.
